Devogen Interactive Studios has released the next version of their flagship product.  This release includes a demo showcasing different functions of Genesis2D. An online version is in the works to provide a live environment for curious parties. Considered the LARGEST update so far, several bugs have been squashed and lots of new features have been added.  I highly recommend visiting the official announcement thread on the forums for more detailed information.  Modified controls and key assignments, server side additions, new tile sets, improved Xternal Game Editor (XGE), and the ability to contact customer support in your Matrix server are all part of many changes.  Be sure to read about the upcoming features being worked on as some sweet new systems and a streamlined map editor may be implemented in the next build!

Although Genesis2D is a free MORPG engine, three different packages (Personal, Professional, and Corporate) are offered for those willing to shell out cash for premium support, removal of Genesis2D branding, and advanced server options.  Prices range from $59.95 to 149.95 in Australian dollars.

MMOverdose, the only other blog tracking the 2D MORPG scene, aims to broaden its horizons to include a wide range of online games.  Not content with reviewing titles released by the community, blog author Scythe will offer opinions on another niche, 2D MMOs with some 3D thrown in for good measure.  The mash up of professional and independent should yield more content for readers and offer an alternative news source for the MMO-centric crowd.  Visit Zajen’s buddy and tell him I said hello!

Earlier this month Asphodel Games released its first engine to an eagerly awaiting community.  Those well versed in the Visual Basic 6 programming language should be able to tune and tweak Asphodel6 instantly.  A list of features was absent from the official announcement, but rest assured some basic features are similar to other 2D MORPG engines.  Amateur developers will find the engine accessible while veterans can tinker away.  Click the links below for more information and a helpful guide.  Good work, GIAKEN!

Here is a random screenshot of a poorly made map.  Asphodel6 comes bundled with ripped Mother 3 graphics.  Nintendo should really think about localizing the Game Boy Advance game release the title as a downloadable on the DSi Shop.  It looks so pretty.

The BEST map ever created! Behold its beauty!
